Maricopa County is home to 58 schools districts that serve over 700,000 students. School districts are classified as elementary districts (kindergarten- 8th grade), union high school districts (9-12th grades), and unified school districts (kindergarten through 12th grade).

State laws and charter contracts provide schools with autonomy over curriculum, personnel, budget, and schedule. There are over 300 private schools to choose from in Maricopa County.
If a child will attend a private school, the parent or person with custody of the child must file an affidavit of intent form with the County Superintendent of Schools registering that intent within 30 days from the time the child begins to attend a private school.
